Dragging for Jesus
If you find that getting up for church on Sundays just isn’t in God’s plan for you, the Golden Lantern has your Sabbath’s spiritual needs covered. Outfitted in their Sunday best and 3-inch long eyelashes, the Jesus Jubilee has been serving up campy soul-saving tunes on a weekly basis for around seven years now. Current host Reba Douglas channels the kitschy gospel TV programs of the 1970s, which serve as the inspiration for the show’s format and aesthetic. As a warning to attendees, she is also known for the removal of audience member clothing during her numbers, maintaining a level of raunch rivaled only by the Catholic Church. However, the Jubilee is as transformative as it is scandalous, culminating in Latonia Black’s stirring final number that pulls out all the stops. In a time when bachelorette parties seem to be crowding up the drag circuit, it’s nice to know that you can still find salvation alongside other locals in a divey quarter gay bar drag show.
Sundays, 6:30pm, The Golden Lantern Bar, 1239 Royal Street
