My Hotel Room

As the right hand man of celebrity photographer Greg Gorman, Joshua Smith has often traveled to far-flung destinations to coordinate and teach high-end photography workshops. Spending countless nights in the unfamiliar ambiances of hotel rooms, Joshua had the idea to document the imprint of his humanity in these sterile and transient spaces. The series now encompasses hundreds of self-portraits taken over the course of more than a decade in every hotel room he has ever stayed in. The images center the private life of the artist on the road, often portraying moments just after waking up, bored, or with a lover buried under the sheets. In the age of the selfie, these photos offer a more vulnerable glimpse into an individual’s daily life. The series My Hotel Room is an ongoing project but here we present a smaller yet representative snapshot–if you will–of the larger series.
